A faulty Honda ignition can quickly turn into a frustrating problem, particularly when the key becomes difficult to turn, gets stuck or the ignition barrel stops operating correctly.

At Origin Car Key Specialists, we provide professional Honda ignition repairs in Perth, including ignition barrel removal, internal component replacement, key cutting and reassembly.

This recent Honda ignition repair was far from a straightforward job. It required removing the complete ignition assembly from the vehicle, dismantling the lock cylinder, replacing the internal wafers, cutting a new key to the correct factory code and carefully reinstalling the repaired components.

Rather than simply replacing the entire ignition assembly, we were able to rebuild the existing mechanical lock cylinder.

Diagnosing the Honda Ignition Problem

Honda ignition barrels can develop problems over time as the internal lock components wear.

Inside the ignition cylinder are small components known as wafers, which interact with the cuts on the key. When the correct key is inserted, these wafers should align and allow the cylinder to rotate.

Over time, worn wafers, damaged components or an excessively worn key can interfere with this operation.

Common symptoms of a failing Honda ignition barrel include:

  • The ignition key becoming difficult to turn.

  • The key getting stuck inside the ignition.

  • Having to jiggle or move the key to start the vehicle.

  • The ignition occasionally refusing to turn.

  • The key turning inconsistently between positions.

These symptoms don’t automatically mean the entire ignition assembly needs replacing. In many cases, a professional ignition barrel rebuild may be a suitable repair.

Removing the Honda Ignition Assembly

The first major step involved accessing and removing the ignition assembly from the steering column.

This process required removing the necessary steering column covers, disconnecting the relevant electrical connectors and carefully extracting the ignition assembly.

Honda ignition housings can be challenging to remove because of their mounting arrangements, limited access and security fasteners.

Care is needed around the steering column components, ignition switch and surrounding wiring to prevent unnecessary damage during removal.

Once the assembly was removed, we could access the mechanical ignition barrel for disassembly and repair.

Dismantling the Ignition Barrel and Replacing the Wafers

With the ignition assembly removed, the next stage involved carefully dismantling the ignition lock cylinder.

This was one of the more detailed parts of the repair.

The lock cylinder contains a series of small wafers and springs that must sit correctly inside the barrel for the key to operate smoothly.

We removed the existing components and installed new ignition wafers, restoring the mechanical operation of the lock cylinder.

Correct wafer positioning is critical. Incorrectly fitted wafers can prevent the key from turning or cause the ignition to bind.

By rebuilding the original lock cylinder, we could retain the existing ignition housing rather than replacing the complete assembly.

Cutting a New Honda Key to Code

As part of the ignition repair, we also cut a new Honda key to the correct key code.

This is an important part of the process because a worn key can contribute to poor ignition operation, even after internal components have been replaced.

Unlike simply duplicating an existing worn key, cutting a key to code allows us to produce the blade according to the correct key-cutting specifications.

This helps ensure the new key operates properly with the rebuilt ignition cylinder.

Our mobile automotive locksmith service is equipped with professional key-cutting and vehicle key equipment, allowing us to complete a wide range of Honda key and ignition repairs.

Reassembling and Reinstalling the Ignition

After rebuilding the lock cylinder and cutting the new key, the ignition components were carefully reassembled.

The mechanical operation was checked before the ignition assembly was reinstalled into the steering column.

The assembly was then refitted, the relevant electrical connections reconnected and the steering column components reassembled.

The completed repair restored proper mechanical operation of the Honda ignition with the newly cut key.

This job demonstrates why automotive ignition repairs often require more than simply replacing a key or spraying lubricant into a stubborn ignition barrel.

Can a Honda Ignition Barrel Be Repaired Instead of Replaced?

Yes. Many Honda ignition barrel problems can be repaired without replacing the complete ignition assembly.

Depending on the condition of the internal components, a locksmith may be able to rebuild the original lock cylinder using replacement wafers and springs.

Possible advantages include:

  • Retaining the original ignition housing.

  • Avoiding unnecessary replacement of the complete ignition assembly.

  • Restoring correct operation with new internal components.

  • Cutting a new key to the correct specifications.

  • Potentially reducing repair costs compared with complete assembly replacement.

However, not every damaged ignition can be rebuilt. Severely damaged housings, cylinders or other components may require replacement.

A proper inspection is essential before deciding on the best repair method.
