First steps if your key gets wet

Open the fob, remove the battery, and gently pat everything dry with a soft cloth. Leave the parts to air-dry fully — ideally overnight — before reassembling. Drying it out promptly gives the electronics the best chance of surviving.

What not to do

Don’t press the buttons repeatedly while it’s wet, and don’t use a hairdryer or oven — direct heat can warp the casing and damage the chip. Rice is a popular myth and does little; clean air-drying is more effective.
