Car Key Won’t Turn in the Ignition? Causes and Fixes

A key that won’t turn in the ignition is frustrating, but the key itself is often not the real culprit. Here are the most common causes and what each one means for getting moving again.

The steering lock is engaged

This is the most common and least serious cause. If you turned the wheel after parking, the steering lock can bind against the ignition. Gently rock the steering wheel left and right while turning the key — it usually frees immediately.

A worn key or worn ignition barrel

Keys wear down over years of use, and so do ignition barrels. If a worn key is the problem, a freshly cut key from your code can fix it. If the barrel itself is worn, it may need repair or replacement — something a mobile locksmith can assess and often handle on-site.

Immobiliser or transponder fault

If the key turns but the car won’t start, the immobiliser may not be recognising the chip. This can require re-programming the key. A locksmith with diagnostic equipment can confirm whether it’s a programming issue or a key fault.
