Transponder Key vs Smart Key vs Remote Fob Explained

“Car key” means very different things depending on your vehicle. Knowing which type you have helps you understand what a replacement involves and why prices vary so much.

Transponder keys

A transponder key has a small chip in the plastic head that sends a code to your car’s immobiliser. The engine only starts if the code matches. You still physically insert and turn the key, but it must be programmed to the car — a blank cut key alone won’t start it.

Remote fobs

A remote fob adds buttons to lock, unlock, and sometimes start your car remotely. Many combine a transponder chip with a flip-out or fixed blade. Replacing one means sourcing the fob, cutting the blade, and programming both the chip and the remote functions.

Proximity smart keys

Smart keys let you unlock and start the car with push-button start while the key stays in your pocket. They’re the most advanced — and most expensive — to replace, because the fob hardware and programming are both more involved.
